As we await the new year, 2012, a variety of gifts from 13 Crete merchants is waiting for the New Year’s baby born at Crete Area Medical Center.

After the birth of baby girl Synthia Daniela Vasquez in January of this year, the tally of new year’s baby girls to boys is 39 to 24, respectively. This Crete tradition dates back to 1949, when Donna Rae Mass was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mass of Western.

Since 1949, businesses within the community have donated a variety of items to help the first baby of the new year and family off to a happy and healthy start.

Among the prizes to celebrate this joyous occasion in 2012 are gift baskets, savings accounts and gift certificates including chances for a night out or to take in a movie.

First Baby Prizes

Crete Foodmart, bottle of baby wash and package of size 1 diapers; The Crete News, one year subscription; Davidson Insurance Agency, Inc., $25 Crete Cash; ISIS Theatre, two movie passes, a large popcorn and two medium drinks; Jay’s Oil & Propane, oil change gift certificate ($40 value); Ken’s Pharmacy, SunMark cool mist humidifier; Little Peanuts Childcare, a gift for baby; Roesler’s Cornerstone Gift & Thrift Boutique, custom embroidered shirt; Runza, $20 gift card; Skala’s OK Tire Store, free balance and tire rotation; Tami’s Hallmark, photo album; Tutti Frutti Café, gift certificate for a free meal for the family; Walmart, $20 gift card.
