The Crete High boys’ soccer team fell to Nebraska City 3-2 in a shootout Thursday at Nebraska City in their season-opening match.

The Cardinals outshot the Pioneers 18-5, but came up short on the scoreboard.

Nebraska City took a 2-0 lead with goals in the sixth and 33rd minutes.

“Both goals came off of miscues by our defense and keeper,” Crete coach Derek Spence said. “We really didn’t attack the ball like we needed to, we waited for it to come to us and then misplayed it.”

Spence said that the Cards got lots of scoring chances but couldn’t convert.

“We are trying to incorporate high pressure into their system of play, and it showed up by allowing for Crete to get many early shots that just where not converted to goals,” he said.

Crete hosts Lincoln Lutheran Tuesday and Beatrice Thursday in 6:15 p.m. Simon Field starts before traveling to Kearney Catholic Saturday for an 11 a.m. match.
