Concordia sweeps Doane softball team

The Doane softball team was swept by Concordia 3-2 in nine innings and 7-3 March 27 at Seward in the Tigers’ Great Plains Athletic Conference openers, their only action of the past week.
Doane fell to 8-14 overall as their losing skid went to eight games. The Tigers were slated to resume play Wednesday at home with a non-conference twin bill against Bethany College of Lindsborg, Kan. at 3 p.m.
In game one at Seward, the Tigers tied the game at two in the sixth on a Nichole Diaz RBI single. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, Concordia got the winning run with a run-scoring single.
Megan Wingate, who came on in relief in the sixth, took her first loss of the season after scattering three hits, striking out one and not allowing a walk.
The first game was played under something of a cloud for the Tigers after three starting players who had afternoon classes and traveled to Seward after the rest of the team were deemed ineligible to play by the umpire.
The ruling that the players could not play in the first game because they were not at the field before the first pitch was later discovered to be incorrect, according to Doane sports information director Rick Schmuecker.
Since the players in question were on Doane’s line-up card as substitutes, Schmuecker said, they should have been allowed to be subbed in during the course of the game.
In game two, the Bulldogs took command with five runs in the second after hitting a pair of singles, a double and a triple.
Their lead increased to 7-1 after batting in the third and Doane could not get closer than the final count.
