The Doane baseball team opened their Great Plains Athletic Conference slate with home sweeps over Northwestern and Dordt Friday and Saturday.

The Tigers topped the Red Raiders 2-1 and 5-1 Friday, then came back with a 6-4 win in eight innings against Dordt in Saturday’s first game before exploding for a field-record 23 runs against six for the Defenders in the second game.

Doane lost at home to Bellevue 6-5 Monday in a nine-inning game as the Bruins counted on a two-run double in the top of the ninth to take the lead for good. The Tigers fell to 19-10 on the season with the loss.

Tiger third baseman Ethan Schroeder, a sophomore from Papillion, was named the GPAC Baseball Player of the Week Tuesday after batting .545, slugging 1.000, hitting one homer, two doubles and racking up 8 RBI in the four Doane conference wins last week.

The Tigers continue their home stand Tuesday with more non-conference action, taking on Avila (Mo.) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

The team finishes up their home stand Friday with a twin bill against Concordia starting at 1 p.m. They will take on Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday in Lincoln in a 1 p.m. doubleheader and then travel to York Tuesday for a single game against the Panthers at 6.
