The Doane baseball team concluded their most successful season in team history last week after compiling a 3-2 record at the Marion, Ind. bracket of the NAIA Baseball National Opening Round.
The Tigers, who won the regular season Great Plains Athletic Conference crown with a 16-4 record, toppled defending NAIA champions Concordia University of Irvine, Calif. twice in Marion before being eliminated by Point Park, Pa. in the first championship game Saturday night.
Doane began their stay in Marion Thursday with a 7-6 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in 11 innings, then shocked Concordia 4-3 that evening to take a 2-0 record into Friday's play.
The Tigers bowed to Point Park (Pa.) 9-1 in their only action of the day on Friday. On Saturday, Doane stayed alive with another one-run win over the defending NAIA champs from California, 6-5, before being eliminated later in the day by Point Park, 7-5.
Doane finished the season with a 36-20 overall mark.
