OAKLAND — A quintet of Bulldogs and a lone Timberwolf have made the trip to the 2012 Class D State Boys Golf Championships at the River’s Edge Golf Course in North Platte this week, but only time will tell what they make of their state endeavors.
The Friend golfers won runner-up team honors and placed two in the top 10 at the D-2 District meet at the Oakland Golf Club last week while Felix Ochsenfeld was the lone qualifier for Exeter-Milligan.
Jaxon Clouse and Tanner Walker placed fifth and 10th, respectively, at the meet which was won by host Oakland-Craig.
The day was one for comebacks, according to Friend head coach Dave Clouse.
“We had the lowest back 9 team score by 6 shots and passed Pender and Guardian Angels Central Catholic (West Point) to finish second,” Clouse said. “I was very proud of our team today. They took their lumps out there, but the kids showed great character and desire. They put the bad holes behind them and kept fighting.”
Clouse said each player improved on his back nine score which is not an easy thing to do after suffering through a few bad holes.
“Ask Tiger Woods about how that works,” he said. “It was one heck of a comeback!”
Jaxon Clouse carded an 86 for the 16-hole course while Walker was only 4 strokes back at 90.
Reed Waller was 11th with a 91, Brad Vossler carded a 96 and Kyle Sharkey had a 104.
For Exeter-Milligan, Ochsenfeld shot an 87, good for 10th overall. (Auston Darnell of Bancroft-Rosalie and Alex Settje from Leigh also carded 87s, but Ochsenfeld had a better score on the 9.)
Other Timberwolves in the hunt were Brady Bristol, 13th with a 92; Preston Motis, 29th with a 103 and Garrett Pribyl, who finished with a 104 in 31st.
Cody Filipi rounded out the Timberwolves Five with a 110 for 41st place.
