The Crete Legion baseball season got under way last week with the Crete Juniors posting a 2-1 record, falling to Gretna 12-0 Wednesday before topping Seward B 11-3 and Seward A 2-1 Thursday.

Head coach Jeremy Fries explained that Crete would not field a Seniors team this summer due to insufficient numbers. Just 17 boys in all reported, and 13 were age-eligible to play on a Juniors-level team.

“We feel extremely bad for a few guys who can only play Seniors,” Fries said, “but a few of them are playing on Lincoln teams.”

The reworked schedule for the coming week has Crete hosting Waverly today (Wednesday) at 6:30 p.m., traveling to play the Norris A and B teams Friday at Hickman starting at 5:30, to Nebraska City Sunday for a twin bill starting at 4 and to Wahoo Tuesday for a single game at 6:30.

The new schedule indicates that the Thom Stallard Blue River Classic, a Seniors tourney, will go on as scheduled at Tuxedo Park June 14-16 and that the Crete Juniors will play against Seniors competition.
