LegionJrs_file11-29webThe Crete Legion Juniors baseball team exploded for 59 runs Friday and Sunday in doubleheader sweeps on the road against teams from Hickman and Nebraska City, improving to 6-1 on the young season.

Crete defeated the Hickman A and B teams 15-3 and 14-4 in mercy-rule shortened games Friday in Hickman before traveling to Nebraska City on Sunday and posting 8-2 and 22-7 wins there.

“The guys are playing really well right now and we are having fun,” Crete coach Jeremy Fries said. “We’ve had some very good at bats the last few games and our pitchers have thrown pretty well.”

Crete’s home date with Waverly last Wednesday was rained out.

Fries is encouraged with the team’s prospects, but notes the schedule is heating up this week with as many as eight games on tap in the eight days beginning Tuesday.

“We need to make sure we stay focused each game and do the little things better,” he said. “We will begin to nitpick at things we can do better as we continue to move forward.”

Crete played at Wahoo after press time Tuesday before returning for their only home action of the week today (Wednesday) against Elkhorn Mount Michael with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.

The team is in action at the Elkhorn Slugfest this weekend at Elkhorn South High School, beginning with back-to-back stern tests expected Friday against Omaha Westside and Grand Island at 3:30 and 5:30.

Crete takes on Omaha Northwest Saturday at 11:30 a.m. before advancing to bracket play Saturday afternoon and possibly Sunday. Next week begins with a trip to Blair Tuesday.
