The Crete Legion Juniors baseball team slipped to 8-4 on the season last week, falling 10-9 at Wahoo Tuesday, topping Elkhorn Mount Michael 9-4 Wednesday at home and posting a 1-2 mark in the Elkhorn Slugfest Friday and Saturday.

Crete lost to Omaha Westside 7-6 and Millard Red 10-1 on Friday before bouncing back on Saturday with a 22-1 win over Omaha Northwest.

Crete visited Blair after press time Tuesday and will host Bennington Wednesday in what has been changed from a twin bill to a single game with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.

For the past few weeks, the schedule had called for the Crete Juniors to participate in the Thom Stallard Blue River Classic this week, a Seniors tourney which takes place from Thursday through Saturday with a possible rain day on Sunday at Tuxedo Park.

But on Monday night, Coach Jeremy Fries and other team officials decided that the team would not play in the tourney due to a combination of a very hectic upcoming schedule (games every day next week from Tuesday through Sunday) and limited player availability.

Fries said that attempts were made in recent weeks to find a replacement Seniors team to take the Crete Juniors’ place in the Stallard Classic, but none could be found. The tourney will go on as scheduled, but with seven instead of eight Seniors teams.

Crete could have played as many as four games against Seniors teams between Friday and Sunday if they had played in the Stallard Classic.

The regular season slate resumes with a road game Tuesday at Gretna with a 6:30 start.
