The Crete Legion Juniors baseball team lost on the road to Blair by a 9-2 count a week ago Tuesday and defeated Bennington 11-4 Wednesday at Stallard Field.
Crete, 9-5 overall and 3-3 in league play, visits Gretna Tuesday and will host Hickman Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on the eve of the four-day Crete Legion Juniors tourney, which begins Thursday.
Crete and eight other teams from across the state (Fairbury, Lincoln Lutheran, Cozad, Lexington, Pleasant Dale, Gretna, Lincoln High and Ralston) will be on hand with each team playing four games from Thursday through Sunday.
The tournament winner will be determined based on its tourney record, with a tiebreaking procedure also in place.
Crete will face Fairbury Thursday at 12:30 p.m., Lexington Friday at 8, Ralston Saturday at 8 and Pleasant Dale Sunday at 12:30.
Crete returns to league action at Waverly Tuesday and will make up a previously-rained out game with a doubleheader instead of a single game. The game one first pitch is set for 4.
Coach Jeremy Fries said Friday that not playing in last week’s Stallard Classic, a Seniors tourney, would help the team get ready for this week’s grind of games on six consecutive days.
“With a few days off, we will use the time to have guys work on their swings individually and have a team practice before the busy week,” he said. “Hopefully, we can come out and put a string of wins together.”
