Doane football coach Matt Franzen was honored last week by the Lincoln Journal Star as their State College Coach of the Year.

Franzen, who took over the Tiger reins in 2007, compiled a 19-26 mark through his first four seasons while rebuilding the program before recording a breakout season with the Tigers in 2011.

Doane finished 8-2, tying for second place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings, attaining a No. 19 ranking in the final NAIA poll and narrowly missing an NAIA playoff berth.

The Journal Star’s Ken Hambleton pointed out that the 8-2 mark was the best record for a Nebraska GPAC team in 2011 and the second-place finish was tops for a Nebraska school in the conference over the past 10 seasons.
