The Crete Legion Juniors baseball team split in their final week of the regular season, falling to Teckmeyer Financial (Lincoln Christian High School) on Friday at Stallard Field before walloping Beatrice 9-2 Sunday on the road.
A scheduled Thursday home game with Wahoo was canceled by the visitors when they could not field a full roster.
Crete, 14-11, will begin play in the Class B Area 1 tournament at Fairbury Friday, facing sixth-seeded Pleasant Dale at 12:30 p.m.
The tourney, which is taking place at Quinn Field in Fairbury’s City Park, continues through Tuesday.
With a win on Friday, third-seeded Crete would advance to an 8 p.m. Saturday game against either second-seeded Hickman or Auburn. A Friday loss would send Crete into an elimination game Saturday at 3 against the Hickman-Auburn loser.
Succeeding winner’s bracket games for Crete would take place Sunday at 7, Monday at 8 and then the first championship game Tuesday at 5:30. A second championship game would follow if necessary.
The road through the loser’s bracket would lead to games Sunday at 4:30 and Monday at 5:30 before the first championship Tuesday at 5:30.
Crete coach Jeremy Fries said that he is optimistic about the team’s tournament prospects.
“I think this team has a lot of pieces that could make us very successful,” he said, noting that the team is 8-2 when he has his top lineup available. “We have solid pitchers, a solid lineup and guys that are capable of making plays. If we get good pitching, play good defense and limit our mistakes while getting some things going offensively, our chances of moving on look very bright. We just need to make sure we do many of the little details correctly and things will go our way.”
Fries noted that Beatrice is the top seed in the B-1 tourney and that Crete split with second-seeded Hickman this season.
