Crete Juniors start off 2-0 in Chadron

The Crete Legion Juniors are 2-0 in state tournament play, heading into a game tonight against Gretna.
Crete’s Saturday night game with Chadron was postponed to Sunday at 9 a.m. due to lightning. Crete came out on top, 12-2, advancing to an 8 p.m. game with Cozad. They won 7-6.

The Crete Legion Juniors baseball team earned the program’s first area championship and state tournament appearance in over two decades with a 3-2 win over Hickman in the final of the Area B1 Tournament Tuesday in Fairbury.
Crete will take an 18-12 record into the Class B State Tournament in Chadron, which runs from Saturday to Wednesday. They play host Chadron in an 8 p.m. game Saturday.
Crete 3, Hickman 2
Hickman ousted Beatrice in the earlier, elimination game, Tuesday after defeating Fairbury 13-1 in the late game Monday.
Crete’s Steinhoff threw a complete game, giving up only five hits while striking out eight.
The Juniors scattered two runs through the first four innings. A McGinnis solo homerun in the fifth pushed the lead to 3-0.
Hickman scored two in the sixth, but Crete was able to complete the game on a one-run lead and take the area championship.
