JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Jared Schuurmans scored a runner-up finish in the shot put to lead the Doane men’s team to seventh place in the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday. Schuurmans unleashed a toss of 57 feet, 11 1/4 inches on the second round of the prelims to place second in the event. Nick Robinson of Concordia (Calif.) University won with a 58-3. High jumper Katie Bartels came away with the top finish of the day and the meet on the women’s side for Doane, clearing 5-8 3/4 to place third. DeeJay Silcott scored a fifth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 60. She broke her own school record with a 24.79-second clocking in the 200 and was timed in 7.77 in the 60. Also scoring on the women’s side for Doane was freshman Blair Dixon, who shaved nearly three-quarters of a second off her previous lifetime best in the 400 with a 57.23, good for fifth. The Doane women finished 17th in the team standings with 11 points. Virgil Mitchell placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.03 and the Tiger men’s 4x400-meter relay (Laith Etmund, Adam Bosley, Vince Martinez and Mitchell) was sixth in 3:20.21.
